Many visitors wonder what they can see during their night walks around the city of Córdoba. Well, an emblematic monument is the Christ of the Lanterns, built in 1794 by Juan Navarro León, forming part of the sculptural group of the Spanish Baroque. It was financed by the marquises of Hariza and Fray Diego José de Cádiz, who was part of the order of the Capuchins. As for its location, it is located in Plaza de Capuchinos, rectangular in shape, one of the most symbolic squares. Also, there is the convent of the Franciscans, the hospital of San Jacinto (for incurable patients), and the church of Los Dolores. The sculpture is presiding over the place in the central part. At first, this sculpture was known by the name of Christ of the Remedies and Mercy. Built with stone, the cross is the symbol of the crucified Jesus Christ. Next to this, a tombstone appears in which the indulgences granted by it are reflected. Around it, there is a fence with a series of lanterns, which has given rise to the years known as the Christ of the Lanterns. These were replaced in the decade of the eighties because they were not in optimal conditions. Currently, it is one of the busiest places in Cordoba. It is striking, that the soil has been preserved since its construction, known as "Cordovan cobblestone", although it is typical of Andalusian cities. And it is that this type of soil was the one that the Muslims used to put when they were dominating the Peninsula, with the objective of facing the high temperatures during the summer. For this reason, the population watered the soil, the water evaporated and it was more pleasant to be in the courtyards of the houses until sunset to take shelter from the heat. Returning to the Christ of the Lanterns, over time has had a great consideration at the social level in Cordoba, but it was especially from the decade of the fifties when it acquired greater recognition. The reason was due to the fact that at that time Antonio Molina's film was shot, bearing the name of the monument as its title. During Holy Week, the processions that have the Plaza de los Capuchinos, such as the brotherhood of the Blood or the Virgen de los Dolores, are different. As in many places in the historic center, the Christ of the Lanterns tells a legend, which says that it appeared shortly after its construction with a black cape a spectrum at twelve o'clock at night. He prayed for a few minutes to disappear later. Many say that it was a man known as Carvajal, who belonged to a wealthy family in the city, who disappeared under strange circumstances. There are various theories about his disappearance, although there are those who said that he was assaulted at night, being saved by the Christ of the Lanterns, giving rise to the fact that every night at the same time he thanked him. Now that Cordovan nights are not so hot, what better way to enjoy such significant places in the city. The crowded streets are full of life and people, along with monuments dedicated to important people in the history of Cordoba. The Christ of the Lanterns is one of them, which in case intermediate situation with respect to the center, is presented as a good opportunity for those who have not yet come. After the tour of the Jewish quarter, carried out at 7:00 p.m., you can go to the square where this sculpture is located and thus you know another typical place.
